About Crystal Gayle

Early Life

Crystal Gayle was born Brenda Gail Webb on January 9, 1951, in Paintsville, Kentucky. She is the eighth child of Clara Marie “Clary” (née Ramey; 1912 – 1981) and Melvin Theodore “Ted” Webb (1914–1959). The couple had eight children, four girls and four boys.  To support his family, Webb worked as a miner. Unfortunately, in 1952 he was permanently disabled due to black lung disease. and after that, he was unable to work. Faced with difficult times, Clara Marie took on odd jobs to support her family.

Personal Life and Career

In 1971, Gayle married Bill Gatzimos; they had two children: a daughter, Catherine, and a son, Christos.  She has three grandchildren.

Gayle’s professional career began in 1970 when she was signed to Decca Records.

Gayle’s first album, Crystal Gayle, was released in 1975. The record contains her first hit single, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”. The song peaked at number two on the Billboard Country chart and became a crossover hit, reaching number eight on the Billboard Hot 100. Gayle’s second album, Somebody Loves You, was released in 1976 and yielded her first number-one country hit with the title track. “Somebody Loves You” was followed by another number-one hit, “I’ll Get Over You”.

The album’s success propelled Gayle to superstardom and she became one of the most popular female country singers of the 1970s. By the end of the decade, she had scored a total of 19 top-ten hits on the country chart.

In 1987, Gayle released her most successful album to date, When I Dream. The album’s title track was a duet with country singer Gary Morris and became another crossover hit, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100. “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” was also included on the album and once again became a crossover hit, this time reaching number nine on the Hot 100.

Gayle continued to enjoy success throughout the 1980s and early 1990s with such hits as “Half the Way” and “Talking in Your Sleep.”
