About Asleep at the Wheel
Asleep at the Wheel History
Asleep at the Wheel was formed in Paw Paw, West Virginia in 1969 by Ray Benson and Lucky Oceans. The band’s first gig was opening for Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen at the New River Ranch in West Virginia. The band’s name comes from an old saying which means “to not be alert or paying attention.”
The band relocated to Austin, Texas in 1974 and released their debut album, Comin’ Right At Ya, that same year. The album featured the single “The Letter That Johnny Walker Read”, which received heavy airplay on country radio stations. The song helped the band gain a large following in Texas.
In 1975, Asleep at the Wheel won a Grammy Award for Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal for their cover of Bob Wills’ “Maiden’s Prayer”. The band also released their second album, Wheelin’ and Dealin’, that same year.
Asleep at the Wheel continued to release successful albums throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Some of their most popular albums include Reckless (1977), Tribute to the Music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys (1979), and Western Standard Time (1983).
The band’s popularity began to decline in the early 1990s, but they made a comeback in 1996 with the release of their tribute album to Merle Haggard, entitled Tribute to the Bakersfield Sound. Since then, Asleep at the Wheel has continued to tour and release new albums, such as 2011’s It’s a Good Day.
Asleep at the Wheel is one of the most successful and longest-running country music bands in history. Formed in 1969, the band has released over twenty studio albums and won nine Grammy Awards. They are best known for their 1973 hit “The Letter That Johnny Walker Read” and their cover of Bob Wills’ “Maiden’s Prayer”.
