About Bruce Cockburn
Born in 1945 in Ottawa, Ontario, Bruce Cockburn was exposed to a variety of music at an early age. His father was a fan of country music, and his mother liked singing folk songs around the house. Cockburn began playing guitar when he was just 11 years old, and by the time he was a teenager, he was already performing in local clubs and coffeehouses.
Personal Life and Career
Bruce Cockburn’s professional career began in the early 1970s when he signed with the Canadian record label True North Records. His self-titled debut album was released in 1970, and he has since released more than 30 albums of original material. Cockburn’s music is a mix of folk, rock, and blues, with a strong focus on social and political issues. He is an outspoken critic of war and violence, and many of his songs are based on his own experiences as a peace activist.
Cockburn has won numerous awards for his work, including 14 Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammy Awards). In 1982, he was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and in 2001, he was made a Companion of the Order of Canada.
