About Arlo Guthrie

Early Life

Arlo Guthrie was born in 1947 in Brooklyn, New York. His father, Woody Guthrie, was a well-known folk singer and songwriter. Arlo’s mother, Marjorie Mazia, was a professional dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Arlo grew up surrounded by music and soon developed a love for it himself. He began playing the guitar at the age of 15 and started writing his own songs shortly thereafter.

In 1964, at the age of 17, Arlo traveled to England to visit his sister. While there, he performed at various clubs and coffeehouses. It was during this trip that he first met Alice Brock, who would later become his wife. Upon returning to the United States, Arlo enrolled at Harvard University. He did not stay long, however, as he dropped out after only a semester to pursue his music career full-time.

In 1966, Arlo released his first album, “Super Sessions.” The album featured two of his most well-known songs, “The Motorcycle Song” and “Alice’s Restaurant Masacree.” The latter song was based on a true story and became an instant hit. It even earned Arlo a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.

Career

Arlo’s career took off after the release of “Super Sessions.” He went on to release over 20 albums, tour extensively, and even act in a few films. Some of his most popular songs include “City of New Orleans,” “Coming into Los Angeles,” and “Here Comes the Sun.” He has also been inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame.
